The headlines always shutter us”Ten people killed during protests” “people killed in police cells” .These phrases always resurfacing on all media platforms, adding more anger to the youths trying to seek change in governance.Every count on any life lost is a wound to every citizen of the country.it‘s a chilling violation of the most fundamental right:the right to life.I often find myself with a profound what kind of society are we building? when the very institutions tasked with protection become agents of terror and act of dissent becomes a death sentence
consider the young men found dead and their families left with Grim fragments of the memories of their final moments. The articles in our Kenyan constitution which guarantees every citizen right to life(article 26) and freedom of assembly, demonstrations and petition, peacefully and unarmed(article 37)they undermined when vibrant voices are silenced during protests, their aspirations for a better future extinguished by bullets rather than heard by a ear.when those sworn to uphold justice become perpetrators, the entire justice system becomes undermined and a cruel mere joke
organizations mandated the duty to uphold human rights like the Missing voices,Amnesty International and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights have consistently documented the egregious abuses. They often go unheard and accountability remains elusive. The path forward demands more than just legal reforms but an introspection of whether one Kenyan life is valued. It calls for fundamental shift of mindset to our security apparatus prioritizing community engagement and constitution adherence over the use of excessive lethal force .It demands us to reclaim our collective voice not just through demonstrations but through a persistent and unwavering demands for justice and accountability
The echos of lives lost in our streets do not simply fade away. They reverberate through generations, shaping our national identity and challenging our democratic ideals. To ensure that every Kenyans breath is valued, and every life sacred only then can we call truly begin to heal and build a nation where justice is not just constitutional promise, but a lived reality for all
